This clump forming herbaceous form of clematis is ideal for climbing up small obelisks or as in their natural habitat over old stumps. It's nodding bell shaped deep purplish flowers with slightly twisted petals blooms from July through September. The petals are often twisted and recurved and interest is extended in winter with the silvery seed heads. Best grown in shade with the roots shaded but can be grown in part shade, in any moist well drained, it grows to a height and spread of 1.5 to 2 m. Hardy and a great cut flower.
